Maine and New Hampshire are taking the initial steps to establish the region as the premier hub for accelerating SmallSat innovations and reducing the development timeline from 21-42 months to under 12 months, creating high-wage jobs, driving sustainable economic growth, fostering a diverse innovation ecosystem, and enhancing national security. To achieve this vision, the lead organizations in Maine and New Hampshire are committed to working together to tackle three overarching challenges: regulatory barriers, technological limitations, and workforce shortages; by integrating ?ve technology areas: arti?cial intelligence, advanced materials, manufacturing, communications, and cybersecurity; in use-inspired R&D projects and impacting aerospace and defense; manufacturing and advanced materials; telecommunications; environmental monitoring; and cybersecurity industries.
The organizations aim to transform the ME-NH region into a global hub for accelerating innovations for rapidly building SmallSats, addressing challenges from design to operation in the SmallSat value chain. This activity will (a) generate substantial broader impacts by building an inclusive innovation ecosystem in the ME-NH region, creating high-wage jobs, fostering sustainable economic growth, and promoting diversity in STEM ?elds; (b) drive technological advancements and commercialization, enhancing the region’s small satellite industry competitiveness; and (c) ensure rapid innovation translation by aligning academic research with industry needs and fostering cross-sector partnerships, bene?ting federal space agencies, commercial operators, research institutions, and defense sectors. The focus on inclusive engagement will provide STEM opportunities for underrepresented communities, leading to equitable economic growth and enriched community involvement, positioning the region as the national leader in space technology and innovation.
Presenters will discuss this opportunity and interact with the attendees who are interested in participating in this effort. |

NASA has selected 18 small research satellites from 11 states to fly as auxiliary payloads aboard NASA funded rockets. The selected CubeSats were proposed by educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and NASA centers in response to NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative (CSLI) call for proposals issued in August 2019. MESAT-1, the first small sat built in Maine, is an education mission that includes three payloads developed by schools in Maine. The ALBEDO payload investigates the impact of albedo (fraction of solar irradiation reflected back into space) on local temperatures across urban and rural areas. The IMAGER payload will study a low-cost remote sensing tool for coastal estuaries. The HAB payload will study harmful algal blooms to see if they increase atmospheric temperature and water vapor levels in the atmosphere above them. MESAT1 was launched aboard Firefly Aerospace Rocket (Alpha FLT-005) on July 3, 2024 and is currently in the orbit. This sessions presents more details on this mission. |
